# Documentation Policy

> How the public docs surface is scoped, written, and deployed.

# Documentation Policy

Loong keeps its public documentation intentionally focused so readers can
find the right layer quickly.

## Public Docs Boundary

* The repository README is a landing page, not a full product manual.
* The Mintlify site under `site/` is the main public docs surface.
* Repository markdown under `docs/` remains public as supporting reference material and source-facing documentation, not as a second landing surface.
* Internal plans, comparative studies, and backlog-heavy working material should stay out of the OSS docs navigation.

## Reader Path

Use the public docs in this order:

1. Start with `README.md` or `README.zh-CN.md` when you need orientation.
2. Move to Mintlify pages under `site/` for walkthroughs, recipes, and public navigation.
3. Use repository `docs/` when you need source-facing contracts, specs, or supporting references behind the site.

## Route Documents By Audience

| Document shape | Put it here | Why |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| landing-page positioning and repo entry guidance | `README.md` and `README.zh-CN.md` | keep the front page short and scannable |
| public walkthroughs, setup guides, and reader-facing docs | Mintlify source under `site/` | this is the main public docs surface |
| source-level public specs and supporting reference markdown | repository `docs/` | these files support builders and source readers without becoming a second homepage |
| repository-native docs routing and audience maps | `docs/README.md` and `docs/references/README.md` | they keep source readers oriented without promoting maintainer support material into the normal public path |
| backlog packages, internal comparison notes, and working design bundles | outside the public docs navigation | they are not reader-facing product docs |

## Language Policy

* The main repository supports Simplified Chinese only for `README.zh-CN.md`.
* The Mintlify docs source is English-only for now.
* If docs i18n is added later, it should be introduced at the docs-site layer rather than by expanding repository-wide markdown translation.

## If Docs i18n Is Added Later

* Keep `README.zh-CN.md` as the only repository-native translation unless the
repository language policy itself is intentionally changed.
* Add new locales at the Mintlify layer first, starting with the
  reader-facing pages under `site/`.
* Treat English docs source as the canonical authoring base unless an explicit
per-locale workflow is introduced and maintained.
* Do not start by translating repository-native source indexes, maintainer
  support files, or release-governance helpers.
* Translate operator-facing overviews, setup guides, and playbooks before
  translating deeper reference material.

## Publishing Model

* The docs site is designed to deploy from this repository as a monorepo subdirectory.
* The Mintlify source of truth lives in `site/`.
* Repository changes make the site verifiable, but the public deployment still depends on the Mintlify dashboard being connected to this repository.
* Public docs changes should prefer improving the site itself instead of adding more repository-only landing pages.
* Repository-native docs maps should prefer routing readers toward the site or the correct source index instead of recreating another landing surface inside `docs/`.

## Editorial Rule

* Keep the first-run path short.
* Keep shipped behavior separate from planned behavior.
* Keep runtime-backed surfaces, outbound-only surfaces, and catalog-only entries clearly distinguished.
* Prefer truthful public contracts over aspirational product copy.

## Use This Policy When

* you are deciding whether a document belongs in the public docs flow at all
* you are considering new docs translations
* you are unsure whether a README section should stay on the landing page or move into focused docs
